Can speech therapy help me with anything?

As the year (and opportunity to use up available insurance benefits) comes to an end we get lots of phone calls, emails and inquiries from people asking:

‘Can speech therapy help me…?’

Speech Language Pathologists have a broad, and often confusing scope, this post will describe some of the areas that speech therapy can address as and may help you determine if a Speech-Language Assessment could benefit you in any way.

What can we work on?

  1. Voice - If you feel like your voice does not meet the demands of your day, speech therapy can help! For example, speech therapy may be helpful if:

  • You have difficulty being loud and being heard

  • You often feel breathless when you’re talking

  • Your voice is often sore and tired at the end of the day

  • You lose your voice often

  • People often ask you to repeat yourself

  • Your vocal pitch is incongruent with your gender

  1. Public Speaking - Speaking in front of a crowd can be very nerve-racking for many people, speech therapy can help! Whether it is giving a presentation, completing a job interview or introducing yourself to new people, speech therapy is a great opportunity to develop strategies, practice, and get meaningful feedback on your communication style.

  2. Articulation - If you have difficulty being understood by others, or feel that there’s certain words you can’t say very clearly speech therapy can help! Similarly, Accent Modification is an elective service that works towards clear, easy and confident communication, focused on specific speech sounds in the English language that may not be present in your first language.

  3. Effective Communication - Being an ‘effective communicator’ may look different depending on the context. Speech therapy might be helpful if you:

  • Often feel misunderstood by others

  • Have difficulty joining group conversations

  • Struggle to organize your thoughts and ideas

When preparing for your appointment it is helpful to consider:

A) When and where do speech/language/voice difficulties impact you the most?

(e.g., at work, at school, in social conversations)

B) What would “success” in Speech Therapy look like to you?

C) What are some things you’re already doing to work towards your goals?
