Some of our favourite apps to practice the R-sound at home

Working on speech sounds after an SLP session can be difficult - people are busy and it can be tough to remember all the different tips and tricks you've learned with your Speech Therapist. So, finding the right tools to help promote carryover is very important.
Effective articulation therapy often involves high-intensity, short-duration SLP sessions (2–3 sessions per week) plus additional home practice for up to 5x a week!
The more practice that someone is able to get, while also ensuring that they are producing the sound accurately, the better!
Here are 3 apps that help with making practice easy.
StaRt (Free)
This FREE, innovative iOS app and website, created by SLPs at NYU, is all about bringing visual-acoustic biofeedback right into your therapy and home practice sessions. Think of it as giving you a real-time, visual peek at how you’re producing that tricky R sound.
Biofeedback has been shown to improve outcomes in speech sound therapy, and this app can really help provide the support needed for ensuring home practice is being completed appropriately!

Articulation Station Hive ($14 CAD/month)
This is a comprehensive speech therapy app designed by Little Bee Speech to help children and adults improve articulation of 22 English language sounds. With a subscription, you can access activities like flashcards, matching games, and stories for practicing sounds from word to conversation levels. The app also allows you to record productions and mark them as “accurate” or “inaccurate” to keep track of progress. You can choose to access just the sounds that YOU need to practice (for example, the R sound) rather than the entire speech sound repertoire.

Artik Pix (Free - $49.99CAD)
This app has articulation decks and matching games in order to practice speech sounds. There are pre-loaded decks, but you can also have your SLP create a deck with specific words based on what they would like you to practice at home. It's a great tool for speech therapists to use during sessions, but is also a great resource for home practice! You can purchase decks individually, or the full set of all speech sounds, and price varies based on how many speech sound cards you choose to purchase.
Peachie Speechie Youtube Videos (Free)
This one isn’t an app but is an online resource that we love to send to families. Peachie Speechie is an SLP who makes cueing videos online and explains how to produce both a retroflex and bunched R sound! She has lots of really fantastic videos for different speech sounds on her Youtube page and is definitely worth a watch.

Articulation Support at Beyond Speech Therapy
Using apps to support R sound production can really help keep you on track to reach speech sound pronunciation goals. However, just like with any home practice tool, it is essential to first consult with a speech therapist. A professional consultation will ensure you select the most appropriate words, cues, and tools for your specific needs.
